The Republic of Korea and the United States of America have the right to eliminate U.S. land, air and naval forces in and around the territory of the Republic of Korea, as agreed upon. Abraham Denmark, a former U.S. deputy defense secretary for East Asia, said it was the first time since the alliance`s inception in 1953. Many new aspects of global cooperation are potentially directly relevant to the future tasks the Alliance could face on the peninsula, and thus serve as a vehicle to gain experience abroad, in order to prepare for future challenges that could have a direct impact on the stability of the Korean peninsula. At the same time, South Korean defense planners are facing a tension between the need to develop shipping resources and the potential immediate demands for the ability to face new challenges in response to North Korean provocations or instability. While this volume draws attention to new forms of security cooperation in the context of the 2009 Joint Vision Declaration and the impact of a "global Korea", North Korea remains an integral part of the debate, both because the northern threat has provided the initial justification for the alliance and because the unconventional security lessons learned by South Korean troops abroad may find particular relevance in its own Country. The United States should try to create a regular channel of cooperation with North Korea – beyond the New York Canal, which is available beyond the United Nations – that should include a new liaison office, if circumstances permit. This measure should not be a concession, but is part of a renewed public relations and a signal in favour of the American commitment to a more sustained diplomatic commitment to American interests. Improving formal communication between the two sides is an important first step towards achieving the goals of the U.S.-South Korea alliance on the Korean Peninsula.

In 2019, U.S. foreign direct investment in the ICC was $39.1 billion. The two countries reached $168.6 billion in trade in 2019, with significant flows of industrial goods, agricultural products, services and high-tech products. ROK`s foreign direct investment in the United States has more than tripled since 2011, from $19.7 billion to $61.1 billion in 2019, after the countries of the ultimate economic beneficiary, making the Republic of Korea the second largest Source of Foreign Direct Investment to the United States. Over the past three years, Korean companies have made major investment announcements in automotive components, industrial equipment, consumer electronics and other sectors.
The KORUS Free Trade Agreement entered into force on 15 March 2012, underscoring the depth of bilateral trade relations. In 2018, the United States and ROK negotiated amendments and amendments to KORUS and the updated agreement came into effect on January 1, 2019. The road accident and its consequences have been an important catalyst for a broader reassessment of many aspects of the safety relationship.
